Our Technology

The next big thing...
invented millions of years ago

Circular Matters developed the Coobeau® technology, a new way to turn biomass into climate-positive materials. But, we have to humbly admit, we didn’t invent it ourselves, nature showed us the way. We combine the natural ability of natural biopolymers to self-assemble into strong materials, with modern manufacturing techniques that allow scaling.

Improved in our lab

Improved in our lab

With good chemistry, we improved and sped up the natural processes in our lab and pilot plant, to make the technology scalable and the quality consistent. Still natural, but just a bit more controlled.

All our materials are made from rescued biomass. Depending on the type of biomass and processing conditions, materials are stone-, plastic, or wood-like.

With a positive impact

At Circular Matters, we’re positive about the future: we believe that humankind will be able to clean up the mess it created. We take charge by making better, climate-positive materials.

Nature’s inspiration drives us to improve how we make products in the buildings around us. Our aim: offering materials that enhancing the experience of people that interact with the products #MadeFromCircularMatters and at the same time positively contribute to the environment.

We select suppliers and customers that share our vision, and co-create with them to achieve our goals.

A Holistic Approach To The Product Life Cycle

Nature’s regenerative processes inspire us to examine every facet of the lifecycle: from production inputs like e nergy and water utilization, to product end-of-life. Our objective extends beyond singular enhancements; we strive for overall reduced environmental impact and positive social transformation. We collaborate with our customers to make an LCA and/or EPD for their products.

Sustainability Built In From The Start

We eliminate high-risk chemicals and unsustainable methods right from the start of product and process creation. We then assess the available alternatives and select an optimal equilibrium between sustainability, performance, and functionality.

We are inspired by nature’s circular and efficient processes to consider every aspect of the life cycle – all production inputs, energy and water use, and product end-of-life. Our goal is not just one improvement, but reduced environmental impact and positive social change throughout the whole
process. We collaborate with our
customers to make an LCA and/or EPD
for their products.

We start by excluding highly hazardous chemistries and unsustainable practices from the onset of product and process development. We evaluate the remaining options and choose the best balance of sustainability, performance, and function.

Sustainability Is A Journey, Not Simply A Destination

We recognize that there is  always room for improvement. Through setting both short-term and long-term objectives, we outline our forthcoming directions and future aspirations. It shouldn’t be perfect from the start. But: we only go in a certain path if we believe it brings us in the right direction.

Low And Clean Energy

We decrease the amount of energy needed in comparison with legacy materials. Our ceramic alternative for example needs 10x less temperature than the ordinary counterpart. The little energy we do need, comes from solar panels on our roof.

We recognise that there is always room for progress, and are constantly evolving our work. We set near-term and long-terms goals to illustrate where we’re headed next and in the future. But we only go in a certain path if we believe it brings us in the right direction.
